About 120 children from Seaham Harbour Nursery, along with staff and parents, took part in a sponsored walk to raise money for Barnardo’s.

Passers-by were treated to a line of characters which ranged from superheroes to princesses – and that included the teachers.

Youngsters aged from two to four years old all joined in with the event which saw them walk around Seaham before coming back to school, to enjoy a well-deserved picnic.

Head teacher Carole Scott was delighted with their efforts and said: “It was a long line of children and they have all done really well.

“We had princesses, robots, Power Rangers, Spiderman and Batman.”

Teachers join in the fun as well and dressed as cowboys, Minnie Mouse, Snow White, pirates and a soldier.

Carole, who donned a ship’s captain’s outfit herself for the day, added: “It was about a mile-long walk and it is a long way for little legs. It took us about an hour.

“We want to thank the people who were out and about in the community and who generously put money in our collection buckets.

“On top of that, all the children were sponsored and we are aiming to raise about £1,000.”

The walk has become an annual highlight and has been in the school’s calendar for about 15 years.

Carole added: “It is lovely because the people in the shops see us and say ‘it is nice to see you again’.”

The Big Toddle is a sponsored walk for Barnardo’s that helps the UK’s most disadvantaged under fives and each year about 300,000 children take part.
