Fears raised about the safety of a kayaker led to an alert for Coastguard officials.

Seaham's team were called out at 4.15pm today after reports were made that a kayaker could be in difficulty in the sea off the Vane Tempest car park in the town.

A spokesman for the Coastguard said: "We arrived on scene and located the person in question who was actually just fishing, knowing no one was in distress we were stood down and returned to station."

They added the call has been classed as a false alarm with good intent and said anyone concerned about a coast emergency should call 999 and ask for the service.
