Newcastle United Reserves were humbled 6-2 at Northern League club Newcastle Benfield last night.
Ryan Donaldson had the Magpies ahead early on, and Jonny Godsmark grabbed their second to level at 2-2 inside 20 minutes.

But Benfield ran their neighbours ragged, with Scott Emmerson (2), Lee Hamilton (2), Brian Dodsworth and Phil Lumsden all on target. Fraser Forster conceded the first five goals, with Swede Ole Soderberg taking over in the second half.

Newcastle Reserves coach Adam Sadler admitted: "I'm disappointed with the result – it highlights that if you don't defend properly, you get punished. It's as simple as that.

"The second half performance was slightly better, but the damage had already been done. It's the first game, and we'll be looking for an improvement come Monday at Gateshead."

* Whitley Bay claimed a fine 2-1 win at Blyth Spartans, with McFarlane and Lee Picton netting.

* Washington's scheduled friendly at Bedlington tonight has been postponed, as was Shildon's clash with Willington last night.
