On-loan Newcastle full-back Danny Simpson's ankle injury is not as bad as first feared.
But the odds are still stacked against him returning against his old club Ipswich Town on Saturday.

The defender hobbled off against Plymouth Argyle last Saturday, and left St James's Park on crutches.

However, a scan has revealed the 22-year-old has suffered nothing more than bruising to his ankle, and while caretaker boss Chris Hughton is refusing to rule him out of Saturday's game at Portman Road – where Simpson had a loan spell the season before last – he is more likely to return next week.

Should Simpson – on loan from Manchester United until January – fail to prove his fitness, Hughton has a number of options for the right-back slot.

Ryan Taylor, Geremi, Steven Taylor and new signing Zurab Khizanishvili can all play there.
