There must surely be many others like me who are worried that the lack of toilets in our mainline city centre station will jeopardise our chances of winning City of Culture title.
I mean, how can the two issues of unfortunate members of the public ‘caught short’, who are then forced to use the platform, and the City of Culture, possibly be compatible?
The National Rail Enquiries website shows that Sunderland is the only one of the remaining five candidates for the title whose station does not have toilets.
This website has a standard strip of 10 symbols showing the facilities available at each station.
Paisley (Gilmor Street) has seven out of 10, Stoke eight out of 10, Swansea 8 out of 10, Coventry nine out of 10, and, finally, Sunderland with one out of 10.
As with most things in life you have to get the basics right first.
I can only hope that the councillors and all those handling our bid can start to remedy this pathetic state of affairs before we lose out on this golden opportunity for our city.
