Community spirit thrives

I would like to say thanks to all who helped in the Big Beach Clean-up on Thursday, July 21, at Seaburn beach.

This event was a cooperation between the council, Siglion, Sun FM and Sea Front Traders and aimed to help illustrate the problems caused by litter to various generations.

It was great to see the kids turn up with parents and grandparents and also the students who helped collect many bags of litter.

There were refreshments supplied by the Marriott Hotel and the Fat Buddha among others and a display by Force Academy in Star Wars costume. The Army staged a beach landing, which added to the fun.

There was a great atmosphere and I was privileged to attend.

Seaburn is a beautiful place and it is nice to see that so many people were willing to give their time to this sort of activity.

There was great cooperation between different parties and the public.

I have already expressed my thanks to the head of the council department responsible and praised the attitude of council staff but I would also like to thank the many others who worked to make the day a success and not least the volunteers without whom the day would never have been the success it turned out to be.

I spend a great deal of my time out in the Fulwell community and find it to be thriving. This time a lot of the people involved came from further afield and proved that they too have the community spirit.

Coun Margaret Beck,

Fulwell ward
