Have your say

The Sunderland Branch of the British Heart Foundation is nearing the end of its 40th anniversary and will celebrate this with a charity presentation night on Saturday, October 22, at the Grosvenor Casino.

This event is also to say thank you to the Seaburn Strollers, who recently took part in our annual walk raising more than £1,000.

Over the 40 years, we have raised around £250,000 in Sunderland and donated equipment to both hospital and public places such as defibrillators and educational materials to name a few.

Of course, all this would not have been possible without the support and generosity of Sunderland folk to which we would like to give a huge thank you.

I would also like to thank the following for their support over the years: Supermarkets Asda, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Tesco for allowing us to hold fundraising collections.

Louis Cafe, Park Lane, Avenue Pharmacy, Dundas Street, Ford Post Office for helping us raise funds with collecting tins.

Highfield Community School, Ford Estate, Lynn Mearns, Barnes Infants , CCU Nurses and all who took part in our Wear it Beat It campaign in February.

Lynn Mearns, who recently organised a 40th charity night raising more than £1,070, and who has been a fundraising champion for the branch and charity by taking part in the Great North Run, organising coffee mornings and regularly taking part in our Seaburn Stroll.

We have recently held collections at Penshaw Tea Rooms, raising £608.93, and the Victory Club, £121.85.

Without the support of all the above, the branch cannot raise the funds for the charity in its fight against heart disease, which shows no preference to who it affects young or old, male or female.

If we are to continue as a branch and raise the funds to save lives, we desperately need volunteers – students, people with some spare time we would love to hear from you.

If you would like to join us to help celebrate our 40th anniversary and would like a ticket, costing £5, or if you want more information about joining us as a volunteer, please contact me, Michael Roper, by email mickroper1950@hotmail.co.uk or Hilda Ayre on 07526356094 or Liz Parkinson email eparkinson@btinternet.com.
