A PARK has been given a £150,000 facelift.

Adventure Play Park, in West Rainton, now has four new pieces of play equipment.

The latest additions – a climbing boulder, cantilever swing, climbing net and roundabout – add to facilities for children which include an adventure area, BMX track and skate section.

Durham County Council regeneration officer Libby Mahoney said: “It has been a real pleasure to see the passion and commitment of so many community-minded volunteers and the play scheme group, as part of West Rainton Partnership. The end result is just wonderful.

“Youngsters now have the benefit of a range of fantastic state-of-the-art play equipment and facilities.”

The group and West Rainton Youth Club, supported by West Rainton and Leamside Partnership and the council’s regeneration team, secured £49,997 from Community Spaces and £2,000 from Sir James Knott Trust for the third phase of the project.

Earlier work, which included the skate park and BMX track, took place thanks to £100,000 from the Youth Opportunities Fund and Playbuilder.

The finished area was officially opened on Saturday with a performance by a pipe band, fitness taster sessions and a five-a-side football match.
