Young carers on the march

ALL TOGETHER ... Young Carers from South tyneside and Sunderland on their walk

ALL TOGETHER ... Young Carers from South tyneside and Sunderland on their walk

YOUNG carers took time out from looking after others to share experiences with their neighbouring counterparts.

More than 30 youngsters from Sunderland and South Tyneside came together to enjoy a walk along the coastline to Roker.

The gathering was aimed at giving the young carers – some as young as 11 – the chance to chat to new faces about the impact of looking after ill or disabled relatives has on their lives.

The walk was thought up by one of the youngsters and was part of a number of activities organised by the South Tyneside Young Carers Project throughout the half-term holiday.

Nicola Mantalios-Lovett, young carers activity co-ordinator said: “The walk was absolutely brilliant. Everyone was really tired at the end of it but they all felt a sense of achievement by completing the walk from South Shields to Sunderland.

“It was great to see the youngsters from South Tyneside and Sunderland chatting to one another and sharing their experiences.”

A fun day was also held in for the young carers.
