Young boy injured in scooter accident with police car in Sunderland

AN eight-year-old boy was taken to hospital after he collided with a police car as he rode his scooter.

The accident happened in Vicarage Lane in Silksworth, Sunderland, at about 6.30pm yesterday.

The schoolboy was taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The road was closed from Warwick Terrace and Lincoln Avenue, and at the roundabout with Silksworth Lane along to Blind Lane to North Street.

The driver of the police car was not injured.

Police have now launched a probe into the accident.

Chief Superintendent Chris Thomson said: “A full investigation will be carried out to establish the circumstances of the collision, and extra officers will be in the area to inform residents about the incident, and offer them reassurance and answer any concerns they may have.

“In these circumstances the matter will be in accordance with procedure and be referred to the IPCC.”
