“We gigged together about five years ago,” explained Paul.
“I was touring with my EP and played a gig in Essex where I met Matt, we got to know each other through that.
“We all got the shock of our lives when we saw him on X Factor. Now he’s out of his deal with Simon Cowell, he has more control over his career and he asked if I wanted to give him a hand.”
Paul is supporting Matt at dates across the country this week before he heads home to release his own third album.
Paul Liddell & Delphians – Live was recorded at the Grey Horse in his home village and will be launched on Saturday with a set at Sunderland Minster.
“I play all over the place as a solo act and with the band and we really enjoy the more intimate gigs,” explained Paul.
“That’s why we chose to record the album upstairs at the Grey Horse. It feels more enclosed.
“There were only 80 tickets and the recording gig sold out in just over a day, which we were really chuffed about.
“The album itself is a very stripped-back, chilled, acoustic affair with a mixture of solo tracks and Delphians tracks played acoustically.”
The 31-year-old, who runs an open mic night on Mondays at Washington Arts Centre, has used the Minster in the past for gigs and says the venue is perfect for acoustic music.
He said: “It’s a wonderful venue. It’s built for music and the people there are really open to ideas. They want it to be a hub for the community.”
Doors at Saturday’s gig open at 7.30pm with music to be performed from 8pm.
