A WOMAN remains in a critical condition after falling from her horse.
The 29-year-old was riding in Fence Houses when she fell into the road at the junction of John Street and Durham Street.
The woman suffered serious head injuries during the accident yesterday.
Paramedics treated the rider at the roadside and the Great North Air Ambulance (GNAA) was called to the scene.
The woman was given an anaesthetic before being flown to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary for emergency treatment.
She remains in hospital in a critical condition.
Jane Peacock, a doctor with the GNEAA, said: “When we arrived, paramedics were working on her.
“With all serious head injuries, it is essential that the victim is anaesthetised as an intervention, which we did at the roadside before flying her to the specialist trauma centre in Newcastle.”
The woman underwent emergency surgery and remains in intensive care in a critical condition.
The accident happened at about 8.50am yesterday.
