A WOMAN was taken to hospital after a car smash.
The injured woman, was a passenger in the Citroen Saxo, which hit a lamppost in Albany, Washington.
She managed to escape from the car, along with the man who was driving.
Two fire engines were called to the accident, in Windlass Lane. Crews gave the woman first aid for a suspected back injury until paramedics arrived.
The woman was then placed on a spinal board and taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead.
The area was cordoned off during the incident, which happened at about 9.40am on Tuesday.
