A woman was forced to flee her home after fire swept through a five-storey property last night.

Crews from Washington, Marley Park and Birtley fire stations were called out to tackle a blaze at the townhouse in Lanercost, Washington at 9.06pm yesterday evening.

The fire caused damage to the front door of the building, which was severely smoke-logged from within.

A 55-year-old female occupant exited the property through a groundfloor window.

She was assisted by paramedics at the scene but did not require hospital treatment.

Fire fighters extinguished the fire using two hose reels, as well as specialist breathing apparatus and positive pressure ventilation equipment when inside the building.

The fire caused light smoke damage to a neighbouring property.
