A WOMAN has died after falling from Wearmouth Bridge.
Police received reports that the woman had fallen 85ft from the bridge at around 2.15pm yesterday.
Fire crews, and RNLI were called to the scene and an RAF helicopter was scrambled.
The woman was pulled from the River Wear by the fire brigade. She was given emergency first aid until the helicopter arrived and flew her to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, where it was later confirmed she had died.
Ben Mitchell, from the RNLI said: “Sadly, despite the best efforts of all concerned we were unable to regain any vital signs from the woman.”
