AN ANCIENT organisation has appointed its first woman to the role of warden.
The City of Durham Freeman, which dates back to the 14th century, was able to start admitting women to its membership earlier this year after a change in equality rules.
The organisation has already welcomed 23 women into its ranks.
It has now appointed Vera Davidson as its first female guild warden.
She has taken up the post in its Drapers’ Company.
Total membership of the organisation is expected to top 200 by the end of the year.
The group is also preparing to welcome members of another historic society this weekend, when the Fellmongers Company of Richmond in North Yorkshire visits Durham Town Hall on Sunday.
