DRIVERS are advised to be prepared for winter.

As the weather changes and conditions get more tricky, Northumbria Police are urging drivers to plan ahead.

The force has launched a new section on its website advising on all aspects of road safety.

Temporary Chief Inspector Sarah Pitt said: “It’s getting colder and darker, so it’s sensible to make sure your vehicle is in good condition and you’re prepared in case of bad weather.

“That means checking your oil, water and tyres and keep your screenwash topped up with some anti-freeze.

“It’s also a good idea to keep items in your car such as a blanket, wellies, a shovel and a torch in case you break down.”

More information on winter driving can be found on Northumbria Police website’s new Roads Policing section.

It provides safety advice, and explains what the force does to minimise casualties on the region’s roads.
