South Bents Townswomen’s Guild committee meets tomorrow in Whitburn Methodist Church hall at 6.30pm prior to craft class at 7pm. Next Wednesday, October 26, Jack Curtis is giving a talk entitled World War Two Evacuation at the social studies meeting.

The Word, the new National Centre for the Written Word in South Shields opens on Saturday with a full range of exhibitions, showcases, displays and presentations as well as interactive story-telling/drama sessions for children. Actify, a seated exercise class takes place each Friday morning at 10 am in the Barnes Institute. Classes consisting of stretches and exercise suited to individual ability and condition last 30 minutes, followed by a half hour chat over refreshments, where support and advice can be given. Souter Lighthouse, the gift shop and tea room are open daily from 11am to 5pm. On Friday and Saturday, October 28 and 29, there will be Haunting Hallowe’en Fun for youngsters from 11am to 4pm. This activity is free but admission charges apply. Keep Whitburn Green Neighbourhood Forum is holding a Hallowe’en Fun Morning in the Barnes Institute on Tuesday, October 25, at 10am. All families are welcome. There will be an open general progress meeting of the forum in the Barnes institute on Saturday, October 29, at 10am.

CREATE is holding a half-term Hallowe’en workshop in the Barnes Institute on Wednesday, October 26, from 10am to 3pm. This will be suitable for children aged four and over. To book a place, call Lyndsey on 07852 975 494.

The Barnes Institute is available for hire for one-off events, eg children’s parties and can accommodate a bouncy castle. Please contact Carol Shield on 07767 156 134 for more information. A coffee morning is held every Monday and Wednesday from 10am to noon to which all are welcome.
