An appeal is urging people to jump to the challenge and boost Christmas cheer.

Christmas Jumper Day will be held on Friday, giving schools, work places and community groups the chance to feel festive while raising cash for good causes.

The appeal hopes to inspire a whole army of fundraisers to raise more money than ever before.

Save the Children, Macmillan Cancer Support and Make-A-Wish will benefit through ITV’s Text Santa.

An appeal spokesman said: “The appeal hopes to inspire a whole army of fundraisers to raise more money than ever before.

“The money raised will go towards funding nurses and other essential workers so people affected by cancer get the support they need – granting wishes to enrich the lives of children and young people fighting life-threatening conditions, and transforming children’s lives here and abroad to give hope to families in difficulty at Christmas.”

Last year’s cash provided 45,000 hours of care to young people with cancer, support 3,600 dementia sufferers, and provide 51,650 hours of care.

The appeal is being backed by celebrities including Phillip Schofield, Holly Willoughby, Ant and Dec, Kimberley Walsh, who stars alongside Sunderland’s Ben Forster in Elf in the West End of London, and boxer Carl Froch.

Friday’s TV entertainment will feature stars from Downton Abbey and Coronation Street and a special edition of Ninja Warrior UK.

People can sign up to Christmas Jumper Day via ITV.com/textsanta.
