RAIN couldn’t dampen a community’s spirits as they celebrated a summer festival in Wearside.

The first St Andrew’s Methodist Church Southwick Summer Community Festival was opened by the Mayor Coun Norma Wright.

A greenhouse, which has been built with funds provided by Sunderland City Council, got its official opening at the event.

The Rev Andrew Palmer, said: “This is part of our work in Southwick to encourage people to see our church and its buildings as a resource for the community.

“We normally have a summer fair, but we decided something different like this would be nice.

“We really want to celebrate the community in Southwick.”

Among the activities taking place were displays from St Andrew’s Karate Club and dancing from Julie Donachie Dance School.

Northburn Steel Band also performed as youngsters enjoyed games and face painting fun.
