A DERBY defeat for the Black Cats failed to put a damper on John and Leanne Slasor’s wedding day.
The Washington couple could not believe it when they realised the biggest match of the season clashed with their nuptials on Saturday.
But despite his beloved team falling to the Mags, John said it was the happiest day of his life and one he will always treasure.
All the football-mad guests who went to the Stadium of Light made it to the church in time for the ceremony.
John, who lives in Helmdon, Sulgrave, with Leanne and their two-year-old daughter, Sophie, said listening to the game on the radio helped calm his nerves before heading to Our Blessed Lady’s Church in Washington to tie the knot.
The 24-year-old added: “I was fine while the game was on, but as soon as the game was finished then I started becoming a nervous wreck for the wedding.
“Leanne looked beautiful, absolutely stunning when she came down the isle,.
“I welled up with tears but managed to keep them back. It was well worth missing the match for.”
John, who works for the Jobcentre, said he and Leanne, 24, both had the most fantastic day. “Everything went perfectly from beginning to end, we couldn’t have wished for anything more.”
Although, John’s best man, Gary Scott, a staunch NUFC supporter, did feel the need to gloat in his wedding speech.
“He was winding me up something rotten,” said John.
“I hadn’t realised how many Newcastle supporters we had invited to the wedding until they all gave a big cheer over the result.
“But it was all done in good fun.”
The happy couple are now looking forward to a honeymoon in Mexico.
