WEARSIDE woke up to another deep frost today as the cold weather took hold.
Icy conditions meant that motorists had to drive carefully on slippy roads in Sunderland and County Durham.
Temperatures are a few degrees below the seasonal average for this time of year.
Tomorrow is expected to be another cold day for the area, with low cloud predicted throughout.
Experts say this will bring a high of just 3˚C and during the afternoon it will become cloudy, but remain dry.
Some sunshine is predicted to break through over the next days however.
Wednesday will be slightly warmer with rain predicted in the morning and highs of 9˚C, with a chance of sunshine expected on Thursday.
Temperatures could then reach as high as double figures – but the warmer front isn’t expected to last long.
Forecasters say that the the cold snap is set to return by the weekend as conditions get more windy, with wintry showers.
