From street parties to beacon lighting and fireworks, events took place across the region to mark the milestone.
In Hetton, The Laurels Care Home got in the 1940s spirit as staff donned period costumes and decorated the home with patriotic bunting for a party. Residents also enjoyed a sing-along and high tea.
A VE Day party was also held at Birchwood Court Care Home in Seaside Lane, Easington Colliery.
Meanwhile, a beacon was lit at Cliffe Park in Sunderland as part of national celebrations, led by The Queen, to mark the event.
