A POPPY appeal is on target to break records.
The Royal British Legion has so far collected £27,016 in Washington – just £500 short of last year’s figure.
However, it has still to collect a last round of donations, so it reckons the £28,000 mark can be broken.
Secretary Malcolm Pickering, 56, said: “We enjoyed support across the board, from young and old alike. The poppy is ingrained in people’s lives. I am extremely happy with the amount raised.”
This year’s appeal was launched in October by MP Sharon Hodgson, the branch’s honorary secretary.
About £16,000 was donated at a stall manned for two weeks at Asda at the Galleries, with another £2,000 handed over by three Asda depots.
