MOTORISTS are being urged to be careful on the roads after heavy rainfall overnight.
Northumbria Police issued the advice after a number of roads were affected by flooding and standing water.
Drivers were hit by problems during rush hour as deep puddles affected major routes in and out of Wearside.
They included the A19 at Testos roundabout, with delays also hitting the northbound carriageway between Boldon and Murton.
The A1018 Shields Road in Cleadon was also affected, with workers at the spot before 7am as they tried to clear the area of water.
In County Durham, the B1287 Seaham to Ryhope road was flooded at its lowest point.
Police said drivers should allow extra time for their journey and make sure they leave plenty of distance from the vehicle in front.
They were also urged to avoid driving into standing water where possible and to drive to the road conditions.
