Police are warning residents in Washington to be on their guard after a bogus workman targeted an elderly woman.

A man called at the home of a 90-year-old woman in the Albany area at 3.48pm today, claiming he had arranged a visit to assist her with some work.

While there, and unknown to the victim, he stole cash before saying he was going to get a steam cleaner. He then left the address.

The man is described as 6ft tall, medium build, and with short brown hair. It’s believed he was wearing a black top and trousers with red writing.

Police are concerned the man may have tried to carry out work at other properties in the area and officers are appealing for anyone with any information to contact them.

Extra police patrols are being carried throughout Albany this evening, both to make enquiries with local residents and offer crime prevention advice and reassurance.

Anyone who saw the man, or who has any information that could help police identify him, is asked to ring 101 ext 69191 quoting reference number 0891 06/06/15.
