One route will take walkers to the Washington wetlands, while a longer walk will lead them along the north bank of the river, to Fatfield, and then on to Penshaw Monument.

And those who sign up for the third and final of the BIG events held by Sunderland City Council this year, will get a free swim in any of the authority’s pools during the summer holidays.

Coun John Kelly, portfolio holder for public health, wellness and culture, said: “There are two walks, of 6.5 miles and 11.5 miles, which give families the opportunity to walk along really what is a historic corridor within Sunderland, the river itself, and finishing off with the wetlands and Penshaw Monument, with different landmarks along the river corridor.”
