ARMED Forces Day organisers have launched a recruitment drive for volunteers.
People of all ages will come together next month in appreciation of the work and sacrifice of Britain’s Army, Navy and Air Force.
Coinciding with other events across the country, the three-day extravaganza, which aims to be one of the biggest of its kind in England, will take place at Seaburn Recreation Park.
Hoping to build on the success of last year’s debut, which attracted thousands of visitors, organisers are now looking for volunteers to help ensure it runs smoothly.
“At present, we are looking for volunteers to help us, in particular any qualified personnel such as doormen and stewards,” said organiser Paul Jasper.
“We would also like to hear from any family members of serving soldiers, airmen or sailors who would like to help.
“If there are any groups of performers who would like to take part, or stall holders who would like to attend, then please give us a call.
“This event is fast becoming the premier event in Sunderland.
“It promises to be a fantastic weekend and we would love to see everyone enjoying themselves.”
Combining music and dancing with military tributes and displays, it will raise awareness of the work of service personnel as well as allow the public to show their support for serving troops, veterans and cadets.
Mr Jasper, chairman of the Silver Bugle Association military group, said: “The British armed forces are respected and admired for their professionalism and dedication towards serving their country in all sorts of different ways over the years, from the world wars and campaigns, to our present day in Afghanistan.
“It’s important that the people of the North East support them by celebrating their commitment.”
The final day of the event will be dedicated to this year’s London Olympics, featuring a series of games and competitions.
“On Saturday and Sunday there is something for all the family, from fairground rides to stalls and performances by local groups, singers and dancers,” he said. “There will be five-a-side football and Olympics-themed games.
“We will also support the military tattoo on the evening of June 30 at St Peter’s university campus.”
Armed Forces Day will take place at Seaburn Recreation Park on June 29 and 30 and July 1.
A rock concert will take place on the Friday, between 3pm and 8pm, followed by a host of activities on Saturday and Sunday, starting at 10am.
