VOLUNTEERS are having their cake and eating it too after winning a tasty competition.

Tanya Kaushal-Cash, who lends a hand at Friends of the Drop In, won a delicious prize from Sunderland AFC subsidiary, 1879 Events Management.

The volunteer entered a competition to win a regular supply of cup cakes from the company, and is delighted with her prize.

Tanya said: “I entered the competition as I thought it would be nice to give something back to the volunteers who constantly work hard and offer a lot of their time to the drop in.

“It will be a nice treat for them and a great way of saying thank you for all their hard work.

“A lot of people rely on this service and that’s a real credit to our team of volunteers.”

Friends of the Drop In was set up in 2011 to support people who have lived traumatic lives, and gives them the opportunity to interact with other people from around the world, who have had similar experiences.

The weekly sessions at St Mary’s Parish Hall, in Bridge Street, Sunderland, also help attendees to integrate into the community by providing them with information and advice, along with food and leisure activities.

Gary Hutchinson, director of 1879 Events Management said: “Friends of the Drop In do a really important job.

“It’s great that they are now able to give a small thank you on a regular basis to the people who volunteer their time.”
