A SHOPLIFTER stole a bottle of vodka from a supermarket, then handed himself in to the police after drinking it.
Phillip Anderson was caught on CCTV taking the bottle of spirit from Asda at The Galleries, Washington, on February 17.
Just 25 minutes later, he walked into a nearby police station and confessed.
Prosecutor Emma Dowling told the court: “He told them he had stolen the vodka from Asda.
“He had consumed it in between and was drunk by the time the police spoke to him.”
The court heard Anderson, who admitted theft, was the subject of a conditional discharge and has other previous convictions.
Mr Recorder Charles Ekins sentenced the 23-year-old to a community order for 12 months with supervision and 100 hours’ unpaid work.
The judge said he accepted Anderson was not prone to committing serious offences.
