RESIDENTS are celebrating the restoration of a miners’ lodge banner.
The Wheatley Hill Heritage Society has carried out work on the 1937 banner, which depicts Peter Lee, the former chairman of the parish council.
Mr Lee was also president of the Miners’ Federation of Great Britain, chairman of County Durham Water Board and Durham County Council.
Peterlee GT Brass Band will play at Wheatley Hill Workingmen’s Club at 7.30pm on Wednesday to mark the restoration.
An exhibition will be held at the village’s heritage centre from 10am to 4pm on Thursday.
A service at All Saints’ Church at 10.30am on Friday will see the banner blessed.
On May 5, other banners will be raised alongside the restored piece at Peter Lee’s graveside from 10.30am, with brass bands at Wheatley Hill Workingmen’s Club from 11.30am.
The community centre will hold a dance at 7.30pm. Tickets £5 each.
