A LITTLE bit of Wearside’s mining heritage will be reborn this weekend.

Youngsters from West Rainton Primary School have teamed up with Bearpark cooperative artists to create a new miners’ banner for the Adventure Colliery.

The banner will be making its official debut at Durham Miners’ Gala in July, the first time West Rainton and Leamside will have been represented in more than 30 years. The whereabouts of the original banner is unknown.

However, a sneak peek is available on Sunday, when the banner sets off from the school at noon, accompanied by the Bearpark and Esh Colliery band, and parades through the village.

It will stop at Springfield Lodge residential home before heading to St Mary’s Church, where it will be dedicated ahead of a celebration in the churchyard.
