MURDERED takeaway boss Tipu Sultan left a legacy to be proud of, mourners were told this evening.

Dozens of people gathered outside the Sunderland dad-of-two’s business in Lake Avenue, South Shields, for a vigil ahead of his funeral tomorrow.

Mr Sultan’s friend Mikayl Yahya told the crowd a story about the great Muslim leader Salah ad-Din – known in the West as Saladin.

“When he died, people were puzzled about why he left so little behind,” said Mr Yahya.

“He left a horse, some armour, a few low-value coins – but a scholar said what he had left behind was a legacy, and that is the thought I want to leave with you.

“Tipu Sultan left behind a legacy. He was a son, a husband, a devoted father and many of us can tell you about the things that he did.

“That is leaving behind a legacy, a legacy of kindness to others, a legacy of your children, your parents and your community.

“Maybe that is what Tipu Sultan left behind – he left a legacy.”
