A LIFEBOAT was scrambled to rescue two men left stranded on a rock by the rising tide.
The pair, from Sunderland, were left trapped near cliffs at Souter Lighthouse, in Whitburn.
Within minutes of the coastguard receiving an emergency telephone call from a concerned member of the public, the RNLI launched its inshore lifeboat.
Ben Mitchell, volunteer lifeboat crewman at Sunderland RNLI, said they quickly found the men, aged 36 and 27, perched precariously on a five-metre wide rock, which was surrounded by water.
The crew reversed the lifeboat against the rock to allow the men to climb on board, before taking them back to shore.
Earlier in the afternoon, Sunderland RNLI was called to help the crew of a 16ft pleasure boat, which broke down off Whitburn.
The vessel was towed back to Sunderland Marina slipway.
