SUNDERLAND’S only Lib Dem called on Nick Clegg to “open his eyes” as he became the first victim of his party’s massacre at the polls.
Mr Dixon lost his Millfield seat to Labour stalwart Bob Price as Sunderland Lib Dems slumped behind minority parties in some wards.
The popular councillor has been an outspoken critic of Mr Clegg and blamed the Deputy Prime Minister for his party’s battering at the ballot box.
“I was half expecting to lose,” he said. “But it is disappointing none the less.
“I put it down to the Nick Clegg and his cronies in Government. It’s definitely all down to the national issues and it’s a shame people have not voted on the local issues.”
He added: “Nick Clegg should take a real hard look at what they are doing as it has been really bad tonight. He needs to listen, he’s got to do something.
“Come the next general election we will also start to lose our MPs if he doesn’t do something now.”
Mr Dixon, a councillor for more than six years, said he was now retiring from politics.
He said he planned to put his name down for an allotment and spend more time with his family.
The Lib Dems managed just 5.5 per cent of the vote on Wearside, losing in all 21 wards they stood in.
