A MAN remains in a critical condition after an early morning street brawl.
The 21-year-old suffered serious head injuries, including suspected bleeding to the brain and a broken jaw after the assault, near to Red Chilli takeaway early on Sunday morning.
It is believed the victim had been enjoying a night out with friends in the city centre when the fight broke out at about 5.10am in Holmeside.
He was taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary for treatment.
His condition has been described as critical but stable.
Detectives heading the investigation are still hunting the attacker and believe there were a number of people in the area at the time of the incident.
They are urging any witnesses and anyone with information to come forward.
DCI Colin Green said: “We would urge anyone who was in Holmeside at around 5am on Sunday to get in contact and help with our inquiries.
“No matter how small the information is, it all helps to build a picture of what has happened.”
Investigating officers cordoned off the area after the attack and remained at the scene throughout Sunday.
Anyone with information is asked to call Northumbria Police on 03456 043 043 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
