A VETERINARY surgery was damaged by fire after a blaze spread from its oil tank.

Firefighters from High Handenhold, Durham and Consett were called to the Westway Veterinary Group in Twizell Lane, West Pelton, at 11.50pm last night after the fire was spotted by neighbours of the business.

A store holding around 1,000 litres of oil outside the building had caught fire, with the crews concerned because the business also has three oxygen tanks in its grounds.

The fire spread to the roof above the operating theatre, but was halted before any other areas of the property were affected.

Crews, including two officers wearing breathing apparatus, used two hose reels and a jet to put out the fire.

It is expected the business, which is near to Roseberry Golf Club, will still open today.
