Van fire causes delays to traffic near Biddick Academy

Fire fighters have extinguished a fire in a vehicle in Washington and buses and cars have been re-routed causing delays.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue service received reports of a vehicle fire at around 7.10am on Tuesday, November 19.

Crews were sent to the scene of a fire located in a van near Biddick Academy on Biddick Lane in the Washington area of Sunderland.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "The incident involved a single vehicle and no persons were involved.”

Fire fighters used two hose reel jets to extinguish the blaze.

At around 7.35am, Go North East were forced to re-route their bus services 2A, 4, 8 and 83. A spokesperson said: “We can't serve bus stops between St Roberts and The Galleries.

“Instead, they're diverting via the Washington Highway in both directions. No buses are serving Biddick or Glebe because of this. Please use stops at St Robert's or Galleries.”
