A man is in a critical condition after being airlifted to hospital following a traffic smash in Sunderland tonight.

It happened in the Woolwich Road area of Witherwack in the city just after 6pm.

A spokesman for the Great North Air Ambulance said that a male in his 20s was anaesthetised after sustaining serious head injuries in the collision.

The doctor-led trauma team treated and stabilised him before flying him to James Cook University Hospital which took 12 minutes, where he remains in a serious condition.

One resident who lives in the street but did not want to be named told the Echo: “There’s about nine police cars and ambulances been here.

“There’s that many here you’d think there’d been a murder or something, not a bike crash.

“I know they were treating the biker but I’m not sure how he is doing now.”
