A STUDENT has been arrested after a racist tweet was sent to former footballer Stan Collymore.
University of Sunderland bosses have launched a probe after the 21-year-old was arrested.
He was being held in custody yesterday and was helping police with their inquiries.
A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: “A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of publishing written material to stir up racial hatred.”
A spokesman for the university added: “Northumbria Police made us aware of a serious allegation against one of our students.
“We take such allegations extremely seriously indeed and are working closely with the police to assist them.
“We have also immediately launched our own internal investigation.”
