Tyneside Coffee Rooms
10 Pilgrim Street, Newcastle. Tel. 261 5945.
AFTER a hardcore morning of Christmas shopping I decided to call it a day.
Tired from lugging our bulging bags about Newcastle, me and my friend thought we'd have a relaxing afternoon instead and headed to the Tyneside Cinema to take advantage of the 3.50 Super Tuesdays offer.
But with our stomachs growling as we queued for our tickets, we thought we'd better grab a quick bite to eat first.
Instead of braving the cold outside, we decided to sample the delights of the Tyneside Coffee Rooms, nestled on the second floor of the cinema.
Judging by the queue of people waiting for a table, we weren't the only ones to have settled on lunch followed by a cheap flick.
But we didn't have to wait long and after a few minutes we were shown to a table by a waitress who still managed a strained smile despite the crowds.
Earlier this year, the Tyneside cinema underwent a radical revamp, but the Coffee Rooms hasn't seen much of a change.
While the new comfy red chairs, black tables and dark brown carpet have spruced the place up, it has retained the unpretentious quaint appeal that keeps people coming back time and time again.
The fact that the family-run business is steeped in history, having served the city for the last seven decades after opening its doors in 1938, just adds to its charm.
Tastefully paying homage to its home, framed posters of classic films hang sparsely on the walls, and the day's specials can be found written on blackboards near the bar.
The main menu is crammed full of delicious dishes, catered to suit the variety of diners that come through its doors.
There's scones, jam and cream (2.30) and muffins (1.75) for those just stopping to snack and sandwiches (3.20), toasties (3.20 to 3.50), toasted ciabattas (4.20) or jacket potatoes (4.90) for those looking for a light bite.
Bearing in mind the coffee rooms is open until 10pm, there's also more substantial meals up for grabs from burgers (3.25 to 3.60), vegetarian quiche (7.25) and fish, chips and peas (6.95) to tempura vegetables (5.95) and spinach and feta goujons (6.50).
We went for the quick option and ordered mozzarella, tomato and basil and mozzarella, chicken and pesto-toasted ciabattas, which came complete with a side salad.
Despite the crowds our food came quickly and apart from a small complaint from my pal that the chicken was a little watery, we enjoyed a pleasant and filling lunch before sitting down in the cinema.
