ONE man had to be cut free and another taken to hospital with chest injuries after a two-car smash on a busy road.

The Renault Clio and a Suzuki Ignis collided on the Coast Road in Blackhall at 1.50pm today.

The driver of the Clio had to be freed from the car by Hartlepool firefighters, who cut off its roof.

He escaped uninjured.

The driver of the Suzuki, which was left with damage to its front end, was taken to hospital with chest injuries.

Both men are from Hartlepool.

The road remained open to traffic while the scene was cleared of the damaged vehicles and debris.
