TWO people were rescued by firefighters after they became stuck in a lift.

The man in his 40s, and the woman in her 20s, were trapped for about an hour in the lift in Zetland Square, Roker, Sunderland.

A spokesman for the Tyne and Wear Fire Brigade said the two people were in between the first and second floor of the 14-storey residential block.

They raised the alarm at about 7.10pm on Monday night.

Firefighters from Fulwell fire station were able to lower the lift to the ground floor under controlled braking.

The rescue proceeded smoothly, and the two people were released unharmed.
