Two people have been arrested after a car being pursued by police smashed into a wall and overturned.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police, said the two male occupants of the car, both aged 23, suffered minor injuries.

She said: "They have been arrested in connection with theft of a car and are in custody."

Fire crews from Hebburn and South Shields were called to the scene at around 11.40pm, but the pair had already been released by police officers.

Earlier in the evening, at 8.40pm, fire crews from South Shields were called to Sea Road where a car had smashed into a lamppost.

A spokesman for the station said the occupants of the Vauxhall Corsa had fled the scene and they were called to make the vehicle safe. Police do not think the two incidents are connected.
