A WOMAN had to be cut free from her car after a hit-and-run incident early today.

Two crews from North Moor fire station at Farringdon had to remove the roof of the Ford Focus after it collided with a Seat Altea, close to the Board Inn in Durham Road, shortly after midnight.

The woman was placed on a spinal board and taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital by ambulance for precautionary checks after suffering chest and back pains. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The driver of the Altea and a passenger ran off immediately after the collision.

Firefighters made both vehicles safe and cleared debris from the road
