A pair of teenagers have been arrested after vigilant members of the public reported suspicious activity to police.
The boys, who are 16 and 17, were arrested after a resident contacted police at 3.30am today.
The caller was reporting a possible burglary in Waterloo Walk, Sulgrave, Washington, and the pair were arrested on suspicion of burglary when officers arrived.
Superintendent Sav Patsalos said: "I'd like to thank the member of public who contacted us and gave us crucial information about a possible burglary in progress and praise the quick response of the officers involved.
"Tackling burglary is a priority for us and we're committed to taking action and ensuring those who are responsible are put before the courts."
Northumbria Police is currently running a Beat The Burglar campaigned, aimed at tackling burglaries and raising awareness of the steps members of the public can take to help prevent themselves from being a victim.
