A TV weathergirl is hoping to bring a bit of sunshine into pet owners’ lives after launching a hunt for Durham’s cutest dog.

North East Tonight’s Phillipa Tomson was on hand with her dogs BG and Billy to launch St Cuthbert’s Hospice’s search for the city’s most adorable pet pooch, the Hot Dogs contest.

Philippa, a keen dog lover and long-standing hospice supporter, said: “Hot Dogs is such a fun event, which I know will appeal to dog lovers everywhere.

“Not only is the contest a bit of fun but by entering, it can really make a difference to people at St Cuthbert’s.”

The competition takes place next month, with the winner unveiled at the hospice’s annual dog walk, Paws for A Cause, in October.

The TV presenter first visited the Durham hospice with BG in 2009, which she described as a “humbling experience”.

She said: “The hospice is such a caring and peaceful place. It was wonderful to see patients’ faces light up when they saw BG and to see the joy that pets can bring to patients and guests.”

The hospice has teamed up with The Gates shopping centre to run the Hot Dogs contest. Participants will receive entry into Paws For A Cause, an 8” by 6” professional photo of their pup and a Wilkinson’s goody bag, plus the chance to win a professional canvas print of their dog, taken by Alan Clarke Photography.

Hot dogs will take place on Friday and Saturday, September 2 and 3, from 9.30am to 5pm at The Gates shopping centre in Durham.

Winners of the competition will be announced at Paws for a Cause on Sunday, October 9, at Houghall Woods, Durham.
