Two families have paid tribute to “inseparable” best friends killed in a weekend road tragedy.

Shaun Maguire, 26, and Michael Sanderson, 24, died after their Renault Clio left the road and hit a stone wall on the B6300 near Meadowfield, Durham, at 6pm on Friday.

The pair, from North Shields, had been close friends for 12 years and shared a love of motorbikes, cars and the custom car scene.

Driver Shaun, who worked as a floorer, was described as a “loving son who loved life and lived it to the full” by his parents Barry and Pam, and sisters Kirsty, 19, and Madison, 14.

Dad Barry added: “We are absolutely devastated and we know Michael’s family are going through the same and we extended our deepest sympathies.”

Shaun doted on his two-year-old nephew and was a much-loved grandson of two grandmas and a grandad.

His best friend Michael, a joiner, was son of Billy and Stephanie and a brother to Rachael, 17.

Michael’s dad Billy said: “He lived life to the full. He had a heart of gold and would do anything for anybody at any time.”

Billy, on behalf of his family, would like to express their thoughts to Shaun’s family and thanked the emergency services for all their support.

A large gathering was held on Saturday night in North Shields by his friends in the custom car scene.

Durham Constabulary are appealing for witnesses to the incident and would particularly would like to speak to the driver of a dark-coloured vehicle which was in the area at the time and may have key information about the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101.
