A MOTORCYCLIST was killed when his bike was involved in a smash with a car.

Ronald Johnson was on his black Suzuki GSXR 600 on Seaside Lane, Easington Village, heading towards the A19, when a beige Nissan Micra travelling in the opposite direction from Rosemary Lane collided with the bike as it was about to turn right into Thorpe Road.

The collision happened at 7.45pm on Sunday.

Mr Johnson, 41, from Holmhill Gardens in Easington Colliery, was taken to the James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough and was pronounced dead at 9.30pm.

The driver of the Micra, an 84-year-old woman from Peterlee, was also treated at the same hospital, for shock and a minor injury to her knee before being released.

As a result of the crash, the road was closed until 12.30am yesterday.

Tributes have been paid to Mr Johnson on Facebook.

Tish McCourt said: “Terrible news god bless you Ronnie and god bless your family.

“I know only to well the pain his family will be going through.
“You and your family will be in my prayers tonight.”

Police are appealing for any witnesses, or anyone else who may have been on the roads in that area, to contact the collision investigation unit on 375 2159.
