A BIKER who died in a collision with a 4x4 has been named as a Sunderland teacher.

Neil Douglas Hamilton, of Offerton Close, South Hylton, was on his bike when the crash happened yesterday at 1pm.

The 60-year-old married father-of-two had been heading towards Tow Law when it is believed the Mitsubishi pick up pulled across the path of his bike on the B6301 Hedley Hill Lane, at its junction of the road leading to East Hedleyhope.

Mr Hamilton, who was a member and organiser of road safety group Cleveland Rospa Club and worked as a supply teacher across the North East, was confirmed dead at the scene.

The driver of the 4x4, a 50-year-old man from Tow Law, suffered minor injuries and has been released on bail after he was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.

His passenger, a 44-year-old woman from Tow Law, also suffered minor injuries.
